New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was admitted to the emergency department of AIIMS Delhi on Thursday. The reason for his hospitalization remains undisclosed.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived at the hospital to check on the veteran leader, while Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi are expected to visit soon. BJP national president JP Nadda also paid a visit to AIIMS, highlighting the bipartisan respect for the former prime minister.
Dr. Singh, who retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, is widely recognized for his pivotal role in India’s economic liberalization during his tenure as finance minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao (1991-1996). Serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha since 1991, he was Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004 before being sworn in as India’s Prime Minister on May 22, 2004, and again for a second term on May 22, 2009.
The 91-year-old statesman is celebrated for his remarkable contribution to Indian politics and economics, and his hospitalization has drawn concern and well-wishes from across the political spectrum.
